%X Meridional air mass exchanges have a strong impact on climate variability in tropical and temperate regions of South America. Polar air advection is of special interest since it is related today to freezing events in southern and southeastern Brazil with serious economic consequences. Polar advection also influenced past climates, with Antarctic air reaching as far as central Amazonia circa 13,000 years ago.
